| | | | Gout is caused by the deposition of uric acid crystals in the joints with hyperuricaemia. The metatarsophalangeal joint of the big toe is affected in about 75% of cases, as well as the small joints of the hands. Major joints may also be affected such as the knee. Due to the deposition of radiotranslucent urate crystals in the juxta articular margins of the small joints of the hands and feet, the typical eroded areas just under the articular margin of the joints, as illustrated, may be seen on X-ray. | | | | < Previous
